Summer Style
I often get questions concerning what to wear in the summer months. Not wanting to look frat, or plain, or too aged are all common concerns that I hear. Now, I will admit this as well, summer is my most difficult dressing season. A partial result of my own body issues that I am working through (but that's a whole different conversation), but mostly it’s due to this southern mugginess. It’s challenging to look put together when you feel like you’re wrapped in a hot, wet blanket – but here are a few tips that I thought that I would share.
These looks are more on the dressy side of the spectrum; probably best suited for The Kentucky Derby or the Steeplechase, a midday meeting, a night on the town, or if you’re anything like me, because it’s a Tuesday.
Whenever possible, I like to stick with lightweight fabrics that breathe. Cotton is a great means to that end. Both my jacket and shirt are cotton and are go-to, inexpensive options.
Summer-weight jackets are a must have; non-padded shoulder, unlined, and lightweight for me. Perfect for adding structure and definition to most any look.
White denim is one of my favorite pieces to wear in the summer months (and beyond). I feel like it offers a bit of refinement when you still want the comfort of jeans. And contrary to popular belief, they pair well with more than one would think.
As I always say, details set you apart. Feel free to experiment with prints and patterns, accessories, and shoes. These suede snuff-colored loafers are great with a variety of looks but are not the only option. I also opted for a bold stripe in my shirt as well as a club collar.
If all of this is still too hot for you, feel free to throw on a solid old faithful like I did here – these pieces will always see you through.
Admittedly, it’s easy to throw on a t-shirt and gym shorts when it’s hot, but I am a firm believer in positive presentation. Take a little bit more time when deciding your look and you’ll be surprised how good you feel.
